About

Design studios that work with startups and design studios built for startups are not the same thing. The first category is large. The second is much smaller — and harder to find, because both describe themselves the same way.

Startup Design Studios covers 20 studios selected specifically for documented, verifiable experience working with companies at the startup stage. The range is wide by design: from Red Antler and Clay, whose work has defined what startup brand identity looks like at its best, to Mission Control and Outcrowd, whose entire model is built around the pre-seed to Series A window. Each was evaluated against five criteria: portfolio quality through live deployed work, genuine startup stage fit, strategic depth, delivery and process clarity, and independent validation from named clients on verifiable platforms.

Each profile includes specific clients, a description of the studio's approach, explicit best-for and not-a-fit-for notes, and an honest account of where the studio's genuine depth lies. A studio with a brilliant consumer DTC portfolio is noted as such — not presented as an equally good choice for a B2B SaaS rebrand.

The 20 studios listed met the inclusion threshold across all criteria. Absence reflects either a gap in verifiable startup experience or not yet having been reviewed.
